Nel fondo del signor
Giuseppe Pastore, in occasione di lavori agricoli, si sono rinvenute, alla
profondità di circa m. 1,60 dal piano della campagna, nello strato di cenere
(volgarmente tuono), tombe a casse rettangolari di tufo, lunghe m. 1,60, larghe
m. 0,60 e alte m. 0,40, e con copertura piana di tegole.
Ne sono state
scoperte tre, l’una accanto all'altra. Contenevano solamente lo scheletro
intero, coperto di terra come talora s'incontra in tombe romane di epoca
relativamente tarda. Le tegole sono romane, come pure un'anfora rinvenuta fra
le terre.
Trovandosi
queste tombe nello strato di cenere e al di sopra dello strato di lapillo, è
evidente che esse siano di un tempo posteriore alla conflagrazione vesuviana.
Dovremmo qui
arrestarci; ma una lucerna frammentata, raccolta ivi stesso, e di cui offriamo
la riproduzione, viene in buon punto a farci sapere che sono tombe cristiane.
Sul piatto di questa lucerna sono rappresentati in rilievo i due esploratori
che ritornano col grappolo dalla terra promessa.

“In the fondo owned by sig. Giuseppe Pastore, during agricultural works, have been found at depths of approximately 1.60 m from the floor of the countryside, in the layer of ash, rectangular box tombs of tufa, 1.60m long, 0.60m wide and 0.40m high, and with a flat tiled roof.
Three were discovered, side by side.
They contained only a full skeleton, covered with earth as was sometimes found in relatively late Roman tombs.
The tiles were Roman, as well as an amphora found among the earth.
These tombs were found in the layer of ashes and above the layer of lapilli, it was clear that they date from a time after the Vesuvian conflagration.
We should stop here; but a fragmented oil lamp, found here, and of which we offer a reproduction, promptly informs us that they are Christian tombs.
On the plate of this oil lamp, represented in relief, are the two explorers who returned with the bunch of grapes from the promised land.”
